Taxi drivers in China are no longer allowed to yawn!

Spotted this article and I thought I’d share it;

Taxi drivers in Shanghai are complaining about a new rule that says drivers should not yawn while driving.

One driver, Gong, who has been driving for more than 10 years, called it “ridiculous and unreasonable”. Gong said although he always avoided yawning in front of passengers, he still believed it was a natural way to get rid of exhaustion.

Shao Xueqing, general manager of a local taxi company, said the rule was aimed at keeping drivers from driving when tired. But he conceded that it was not possible to punish a driver just because he yawned.

However, some passengers said they would worry about safety if a driver kept yawning while driving.

How do you think this would go over in America?!

The Great Ice Cream Debate

Erica and I have a running debate about which ice cream is better; Breyers or Blue Bell. (Now that we’ve been to Italy, ‘gelato’ is now confusing the debate.)I’ve included a poll on the right column of this blog - cast your vote!

Ice Cream

The top three Ice Cream brands in America are Breyers, Dreyer’s, and Blue Bell. Where did Ice Cream come from?

Popular folklore asserts that Marco Polo saw ice cream being made on his trip to China and took the recipe home to Italy with him on his return. However, in his writings Marco Polo never claimed to have introduced ice cream to the west.

How about that Gelato?

Ice cream is a traditional dessert in Italy. Much is still hand-made by individual gelateria (look for the sign ‘produzione propria’, meaning ‘our own make’ in the ice cream shops). Italian ice cream or gelato is made from whole milk, eggs, sugar, and natural flavourings. Gelato typically contains 7-8% fat, less than ice cream’s minimum of 10%.Before the cone became popular for serving ice cream, in English speaking countries, Italian street vendors would serve the ice cream in a small glass dish referred to as a “penny lick” or wrapped in waxed paper and known as a hokey-pokey (possibly a corruption of the Italian “ecco un poco” - “here is a little”).

Breyers or Blue Bell ice cream?

  • Breyers (40%, 6 Votes)
  • Blue Bell (40%, 6 Votes)
  • Different Brand (20%, 3 Votes)
  • Dreyer’s (0%, 0 Votes)
  • I don’t like ice cream. (0%, 0 Votes)

Beijing to put 50,000 bicycles for rent ahead of Olympics

BEIJING, (Xinhua) — Wanna tour Beijing? Rent a bike. The Olympic city plans to put 50,000 bicycles for rent across the city ahead of the Games to curb pollution and ease congestion.

Brand new bikes will be available at 230 outlets close to subway stations, commercial districts, Olympic venues, hotels and office buildings as well as in big communities, according to a “rent a bike” program carried out by Beijing Bicycle Rental Services, a Beijing-based company.

BikesThe company has so far put 5,000 bikes for rent at 30 franchise outlets close to the Beijing Workers Stadium, the Drum Tower, the Forbidden City and the Xidan commercial street, according to the company’s website.

Before next August, the network will be expanded to cover major communities and all the Olympic venues, said Wang Yong, general manager of Beijing Bicycle Rental Services. “Organizations and individuals are welcome to join our service network for free, as long as they can provide an area about the size of one parking space.”

Wang said his company would provide all the bikes for rent, and franchise outlets would get 1 Yuan a day for each bike they operate as running costs.

“The outlets will also get profit sharing at the end of each month, based on their own business incomes,” he said. “Not every outlet can make a profit, as people can rent a bike at one outlet and drop it somewhere else close to their destinations.”

The bicycle rental program is also sponsored by the Beijing Environment Protection Bureau as well as the anti-theft arm of the municipal public security bureau, because bicycles are frequently stolen in the city.

“This is like a centralized management of bicycles so that citizens won’t have to worry about thefts,” said police officer Wang Xiaobing.

To embrace next year’s Olympic Games, Beijing, a city with 3 million motor vehicles and more than 4 million drivers, is working all-out to ease congestion and curb pollution.

Monday is the last day of Beijing’s four-day experiment to test whether pulling 1.3 million cars off its roads each day would prove effective in reducing air pollution during the Games.

Drivers with even-numbered license plates, excluding taxis, buses and emergency vehicles, were told to stay off the roads on Friday and Sunday or face fines. Odd-numbered cars were banned on Saturday and Monday.

Experts say pulling 1.3 million motor vehicles off the roads in Beijing each day can reduce exhaust emissions by 40 percent.

Though Beijing’s sky remained mostly gray and misty as a result of stuffy, humid late summer weather, nearly everyone felt the roads were smoother. “Going to work by bus took me only 15 minutes,” said Zhang Jianguo, a government employee. “Driving took almost the same time.”

Gators Win in Mississippi

It’s been three years since the Gators won a game in Mississippi, and in what turned out to be UF’s first real challenge, Quaterback Tim Tebow led the Gators to a win to take the Gators to 4-0.

Tim Tebow set a school record for quarterbacks with 166 yards rushing and accounted for four touchdowns Saturday to lead the third-ranked Gators to a difficult 30-24 win at Mississippi.

Despite Tebow’s big numbers, it took a late Tony Joiner interception and a pair of time-consuming drives to put the pesky Rebels away in the defending national champions’ first challenge of the season.

Excessive?

Probably most of you had heard the story about Andrew Meyer, the University of Florida student who was at a John Kerry event on the UF campus who got a little annoying and disruptive. The result was several cops taking him down and while holding him down, shocking him with a ‘taser’ in order to subdue him.

UF’s president, J. Bernard Machen, states on UF’s website;

University of Florida Police Chief Linda Stump has requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conduct a formal investigation into the arrest of UF student Andrew Meyer. An independent review such as this will make sure the results are objective and impartial. Chief Stump’s priority is to ensure that the public remains confident in the department’s ability to keep the campus safe.

Two officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

From the video, it seemed like a lot more than TWO officers involved… maybe math has changed at UF since I graduated from UF in ‘96! The ‘exaggeration’ of the facts by Machen seem to signal at least some felt ‘wrong doing’ on the University’s behalf - if not, why mis-represent the facts that are clearly visible to the thousands who’ve seen the video of the incident?

So, what do you think? Was the use of force excessive, or did Andrew Meyer deserve everything he got from the police?

The Chinese characters on the logo say, “Compete in intelligence, compete in skill, compete in endurance.”

That seems like a fairly good translation of “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast.” However, it does not roll off the tongue in the same way…

Florida Surprises Critics in Rout of Tennessee

Well, that old saying “You better get them this year …” — forget about it. The Gators are already better on offense because they have a more talented quarterback and what seems like an endless supply of offensive weapons. And if the defense grows up in a hurry, Florida might even have a shot at defending its SEC championship, maybe even its national title.

TebowThe fifth-ranked Gators grew up in a hurry Saturday, dismantling No. 22 Tennessee 59-20 in front of a sold-out crowd of 90,707 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Gators dominated the Volunteers in every facet of the game. Quarterback Tim Tebow threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in his first SEC start. Running back Brandon James ran back the Volunteers’ first punt 83 yards for a touchdown, and linebacker Dustin Doe returned an interception 18 yards for a backbreaking score.

“I didn’t see this one at all,” said Urban Meyer, who is 9-3 against ranked teams as Florida’s coach. “I didn’t see it coming until the whistle at the end, when I said, ‘My goodness.’”

That’s probably also what 10 other SEC coaches said when they saw the score of the Gators’ lopsided victory. Florida wasn’t supposed to be this good this fast. The Gators have only 10 seniors and 11 juniors. They’ve played 27 freshmen in their first three games. More than 70 percent of Florida’s roster is composed of freshmen and sophomores.

Wow, the “Gator Haters” are NOT happy right now! Goooo Gators!
