Corn Nuts

It turns out, they really are made of corn…who would have thought it!

Corn nuts are prepared by soaking whole corn in water for three days, then deep-frying them in oil until they are hard and brittle.

A friend brought over a [really big] bag of ‘nut’ looking things yesterday but did not tell us what they were.  After that friend left and I had a chance to see them up close, I looked at them and said, “Those look like Corn Nuts!”  Turns out they were!

Now I need to figure out what they are called in Chinese.  Anyone know?

The Chinese Corn Nuts are a huge hit in our house… amazing!

Now Erica wants to learn how to make these herself. Does anyone have any knowledge of Corn Nut Creation that you can share?

I’ve heard you soak them in water for 3 days and then deep fry them until they are hard and brittle. :)

These are one of Dan’s favorite foods that he is nuts about. He will eat just about anything with corn in them. He is easy to please.

I love anything with corn too… it’s my favorite vegetable (starch)!

So, I saw some pictures on Erica’s flickr of these. Did you indeed make them and how did they turn out?

Yes, we made some. They didn’t come out right. I think we used the wrong type of corn.
