Our life has kinda a ‘blur’ lately. If you’ve been following our family’s story, I’m sure you understand! It’s been a few days since I updated everyone here on my blog, so I thought I needed to give an update!
Luke is still in the NICU, but he has been making consistent progress over the past few days! Because he was not having any more troubles keeping his body temp up, he was moved from his special ‘bed’ with the warmer to a normal hospital crib. He has also been pretty consistently keeping his breathing at a more normal (slower) pace. Occasionally his breathing slows way down and sounds the Apnea(?) alarm, but his nurses have not seemed concerned about it. I guess a little bit of that is not a big problem!
Luke’s next big ‘hurdle’, and the one that will determine when we get to take him home, is for him to figure out his eating. He must be able to successfully eat 8 times in a 24 hour period without any need for extra nutrition from his feeding tube or any significant spit-up issue. He also needs to build up the stamina to eat that often, which is tough for such a little guy! So far, he has done 4 feedings in a day, and the next thing is to try 6. Once he does that, he’ll need to do 8 two times in a row (48 hour period.)
So, that is the latest on Luke. Erica is also making steady progress recovering from surgery and figuring out the right mix of activity and rest as she assimilates back into family life at home as well as daily, all-day trips to the hospital to visit Luke!
Thank you to everyone for all of your thoughts and prayers, they mean so much to us!
Update: Friday, 2:30 – just found out they are going to take out Luke’s feeding tube today! He’s been eating so well, they are pretty confident he doesn’t need it anymore!
Update: Saturday, 12:00 – The NICU doctor is going to allow Luke to come home today! He has been doing really well with his feedings and they are comfortable letting him leave the NICU!

Steve and Erica, So thankful to hear that Luke is doing better and hopefully will get to come home soon. Thanks for keeping us updated. Have been thinking about you!! Love, Sarah Affleck and Family
Thanks for your prayers! We have really been blessed by all those who have been praying for us!
This picture of you feeding him really shows how tiny he is. What a miracle he is! I’m so thankful that Luke and Erica are doing so well and that he is now homw as well. Love to all.
