One day. Millions of perspectives. Add yours.

On May 15th Aday.org asks you and people all around the world to pick up your cameras and picture what is close to you. In this unique photographic event, we will work together to create a unique documentation of daily life.

Professionals, amateurs, school children, farmers, social media fans, astronauts and office workers. Cell phone camera, Hasselblad, home made or borrowed. Aday.org is looking for the perspectives of everyone who enjoys photography. The goal is to inspire perspectives on humankind – today and tomorrow.

All images will be displayed online for you and everyone to explore. Some of them will be selected for a book, others will be displayed in digital exhibitions. Every single one will be saved for future research and inspiration.

Let a part of your life inspire generations to come. Share your perspective! Read more about the project and sign up at www.aday.org.

10 Tips For Taking Amazing Photos Of Your Kids

I often get asked by friends, and sometimes from ‘virtual’ friends on flickr or here on my blog, for advice on capturing amazing photos of their kids. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I have learned a thing or two over the years, and I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned! The following tips are a few things that I often tell friends who are looking to improve the photos they take of their kids. I’d love to hear from you, do any of these ring true for you? Do you disagree with any of these? Do you have a tip or two to add to this list? If so, please share it with us and we’ll all improve together!

Okay, let’s get to the tips!

Catch Your Kids Being Themselves:

The best way to avoid the tired old portraits you’ve always taken is to think about your shot and what makes your kids who they are.  Capture family traditions or events that are special to you and your kids and make sure that your family’s personalities are represented. There is nothing wrong with a posed, smile for the camera, type of photo, however, if you really want to start capturing amazing photos of your kids, start focusing on capturing photos that catch your kids being themselves.

Taxis In Hong Kong Rank Among World’s Best

I’m not surprised by this, in our recent stay in HK, just about every taxi has been a positive experience.  In fact, the kids use “Hong Kong Taxis” as the ‘standard’ by which they judge all taxis in other cities.  e.g. “Oh, this taxi is clean, just like a HK taxi.”

Hong Kong taxis were added to the top 10 ranking of world’s best taxis; London and New York cabs have been top-rated globally for the past four years.

“With the increased flag falls and better economy, taxi drivers are earning more, so they are happier in their jobs and provide better services to their passengers,” Lai Ming-hung, chairman of the Taxi and Public Light Bus Concern Group, said.

From a daily earning low of HK$200 (US$25.65) during the 2008 financial crisis, drivers are now earning between HK$400 and HK$500 a day, Lai said. He encourages drivers to be friendly to passengers – locals and visitors alike – and avoid cheating tourists to improve their public impression…

What Does The Future Look Like?

Would you buy a camera like this?

Everyone likes taking pictures

Interesting how much people seem to universally enjoy taking photos!

Why do you suppose that is?

The End of Summer

The weather seems to have started cooling off around here, marking what I think is the end of summer.  Wow!  This summer flew by too quickly!  I guess it was all the fun I was having.

Here is a list of Photography Vocabulary (11/5/07) in Chinese / Pinyin / English that I’ve been working on.

It’s still incomplete and has not been checked completely for accuracy.  Use it however you’d like.  If you have any suggestions for helping improve the list, please leave a comment!

Kid Camera Questions

Kid Camera Comparison

Elizabeth’s THIRD birthday is approaching quickly and Erica and I have decided that the perfect gift for Elizabeth would be a digital camera – one that ACTUALLY works.

She has already taken an interest in photography and has begun to do her own ‘photo shoots’, posing her sister and taking imaginary photos with her toy camera.  Photographer ElizabethOccasionally she asks to take photos with ‘daddy’s camera’, and with my help, she manages to take a decent photo!

So, we are trying to decide what to buy for her.  Looking at what is currently being offered in the ‘Kid Camera’ category is rather disappointing.  EVERY camera in this category has received negative reviews on all the usual sites and blogs. The specs and features of a couple of them are so poor, it’s not much of a jump up from her current TOY camera!  (If every photo is tiny and blurred, what’s the point of getting a REAL camera?)

Therefore, I’m asking for your help.  Does anyone out there have experience with any of the current kid cameras?  Any advice or recommendations?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
